== Description ==

At roughly 5'7", Merilan is a sprightly young woman that is only markedly inhuman by the massive pair of raven-black wings sprouting from her back. She is dressed in crimson traditional Lemurian garb that nonetheless has her own spin on it. It is composed of a white-collared, black-ribboned sleeveless haori that parts three ways past the silk-red obi wrapped around her waist, along with detached black-and-red kimono sleeves, along with a pleated black skirt with translucent ruffles along the hem, and lace-up knee-length boots. A matching crimson headscarf is often seen draped about her head.

== Personality ==

Merilan is an easy-going and driven woman, with a vivacious and playful demeanor. She is full of exuberant curiousity, and seldom lets fear or anxiety stop her from trying new experiences. She is seemingly good-natured and full of humour, more likely to laugh and forgive rather than harbor vengeances; she can also be quite frank, however, and rarely keeps her opinions to herself. She does not rely on conflict and violence as a default option, preferring flight to fight when possible - but, in turn, never too hesitant when she has to defend herself, either, owing to her history as a defender of the floating islands.

Ultimately, Merilan's personality is dictated by a strong and irresistable wanderlust that frequently spurrs her ever forward, towards the highest skies, towards the farthest reaches - to even where there is danger. It is this desire for exploration that forms the cornerstone of her heart's strength - the desire that stems into a love of the world, one of nature, and a love for existence as should be observed. It has proven to be her support from when she escaped the destruction of Lemures, and one that will no doubt continue to be her shield over the Darkness.

== Background ==

Merilan belongs to a race of winged humanoids called the '''Aegyl''', who live high up in the skies of New Ivalice, upon a purvama called '''Lemures'''. Lemures exists far, far away from the Archadian and Rozarrian Empires and the war engulfing them, and indeed, much of the rest of the world, surrounded by an impenetrable barrier created by the Occuria to imprison the aegyl, thousands of years ago.

In her youth, Merilan grew up as an enthusiastic and free-spirited child, who flew from the first day she grew her wings; such is her desire to seek the world that she explored much of Lemures in her formative years, even craving a thirst to sneak into areas deemed forbidden and holy by the '''Aegyl's Canon''', sacred texts dictating the circumstances in which Aegyl should live their life. This same thirst for exploration led her to become a scout and later information-gatherer, to the point where she began writing accounts of her travel for the Aegyl within her home of '''Zephyr, the Windward Isles'''.

When she grew older, however, like other Aegyl, Merilan served as a warrior within the Aegyl's defense forces - plenty of wild beasts and monsters threaten the peace of the Aegyl's settlements, and strong warriors are needed to fend them off. It was at this time that Merilan, who had come of age and completed her training, received her auracite, in her case a verdant green gemstone of suffused elemental wind, as well as her Ring of Pacts, required to summon the guardian Yarhi.

The Yarhi are Espers to the rest of the world -- summoned creatures drawn to existence from motes of power, auracite, each granted to the Aegyl when they come of age. They are summoned through a device known as the '''Ring of Pacts'''. With the aid of their beastly comrades, the Aegyl settlements are well defended thanks to these sky warriors' efforts.

She carries this very same Ring to summon her Yarhi in the current time - the Ring which forms an unbreakable bond between her and her guardian summons, which she treats as her own children or sisters, with much love and care as her closest companions in this strange, new world.

All of Lemures, is effectively gone now, Lemures swallowed into the Darkness - and as far as Merilan knows, she is the only Aegyl around that was fortunate enough to have survived this catastrophe and escaped from the pitch-black prison that holds the rest of her nation captive.

Unfortunately, when Merilan emerged from the Corridor of Darkness, she did not do so with mind unscathed; her memory of Lemures and her time of home is hazy, at best... however, she still has distant thoughts of a land high up in the skies, and still holds fond dreams of finding it again one day...

== Yarhi! ==

'''Traya''': The derpiest and Merilan's main Yarhi, a wind-elemental spin-off of a Shivan. Very adorable. Named after Traverse Town.

'''Shivans''': Blue, ice-elemental, and equally derpy. Shiva's daughters. Technically.
The young SeeD tightly rolls, and slams his back hard against a hard piece of metal railing. He coughs up a few dollops of blood from Seifer's last 'act of mercy' that involved an hour-long session of him trying to get Squall to eat his shoe. The echoing ring of gunfire pinging callously against his cover is all that he needs to know that this live-fire situation he's in may be his last.

No GF. No Para-Magic. The Prison's anti-magic fields have well taken care of that, anyway.
Separated from his fellow SeeDs, and with little room else to hide, Squall Leonhart's only choice... is to fight, with his trademark weapon. He reaches to his belt and snaps in a few explosive discharge rounds, freshly sizzling from the six-round chamber of his Revolver.

The SeeD turns in hand, and rolls swiftly out his cover the moment the gunfire ends - reload time. Three Galbadian soldiers... Uzis, one Sniper Rifle.

It's go time.

Suddenly, the floor explodes underneath the combatants into an inky pool of blackness; it was at that moment that a Force from beyond the world of Hyne surged forth. A force that was beyond raw power, or mortal malice or virtuousness... no, it was the force of song and dance, as the Worlds became Connected.
Ten years of Balamb, and plenty of training,
Two soldiers left -- Squall takes a chance, and knows he's not going to close in on their distance with his melee-ranged weapon compared to that kind of calibre of firearms.

= History =

Born to Raine and Laguna Loire in the village of Winhill, Squall's mother passed away shortly after his birth.

Ouch. And that's not the worst part, either.

Squall's father, Laguna Loire, had run off well before he knew that Raine Loire was pregnant in a move that we may affectionately call hitting it and quitting it, to go on an adventure with his good ol' ex-military pals Kiros and Ward and accidentally depose a super-futuristic wizard despot and become President of the Most Glorious Advanced Future City of Eshtar.

Meanwhile, Squall got sent to an orphanage half a continent away, in the Centra continent - perhaps, in hindsight, not a particularly idyllic location for an orphanage, as it is a Lunar Cry-blown area of blasted wasteland and monsters. This said orphanage is Edea's orphanage, a sorceress; Edea was a loving and caring matron for the children that grew up at that orphanage... until at some point, Edea is possessed by the dying future sorceress Ultimecia and effectively turns Evil. Plus points for future Squall robbing his child self of -another- parental figure in his life. Time travel plots (although the question of how this integrates to the broken-cycle thanks to the merging of worlds is... interesting, but let's not dwell on that before our minds explode from paradoxes).

Incidentally, his half-sister Ellone also leaves him without anyone telling why - because she can send people's consciousness back in time and is in constant danger of being targeted by people who would wish to exploit her, as well, leaving about a one-for-one record of "being left by everyone he ever considers close before his sixth birthday".

Case in point: Is it really a wonder that Squall Leonhart grew up to be the lovable youth that we all know?

Already off to a dazzling start, Squall is admitted at the ripe age of six to a much more welcoming orphanage where he will grow up to the right and proper responsible member of society-- no, scratch that, Squall is admitted into Balamb Garden to fight monsters and train in physical combat, synthesized paramagic and quasi-hallucinatory summoned Espers that have fantastically persistent rumors that they'll give you Alzheimer's, or well near it. At some point, he chooses to train with the gunblade, possibly for as mundane a reason as it's a difficult, archaic weapon and thus the classes would be most quiet and free of bullies that would plague him for the rest of his life.

He meets Seifer on the first day of Gunblade class, and an eternal rivalry is sparked. Mostly by Seifer.

In the proper current timeline, our young hero is 17 years old, and effectively has a reputation as the "lone wolf" amongst the one or two girls that pass him weird love-notes in his locker and... as the student everyone else thinks is a pain in the ass to deal with. The kind of person who plays tennis doubles on his own. Not that this bothers Squall one bit, who just so happens to be perfectly enjoying his alone-time quite well and refining his academic and combative pursuits... save for all of the colors of Balamb who, by measure of fate or a possibly common sentiment that bothering Squall is actually kind of funny, won't leave him alone.

Squall eventually graduates Balamb Garden and joins the elite ranks of SeeD along with his teammates Zell, Selphie; it wasn't long before they were sent off on their first mission, eventually picking up ex-instructor Quistis, free-rangin' cowboy Irvine from neighboring Galbadia Garden and suspect Timber Rebel Rinoa Heartilly, their client. Their mission: Assassinate the ambassador of the biggest republic in the world.

Eager to accomplish his mission of, admittedly, international scandal, Squall and co. travel to Deling City to enact their plans... which, for a multitude of reasons both valid and 'Let's not tell Squall that happened', botches quite fabulously, and ends with our hero with some gigantic ice shards lodged quite deep in him as he passes out and spawns a handful of alternative theories about how the rest of his adventures are just him having a pre-death vision. But, don't worry, Squall is in fact not dead! No, he wakes up in a political prison that buries itself in the desert to prevent escape, and before they can even devise a clever scheme to escape, the Heartless swarm in and swallow their world into the darkness.

-Now-, Squall might wish he were dead instead.

But, no -- he awakens in an unspecified place and time, possibly Traverse Town -- and after regaining his bearings, and gathering his wits about him, he eventually makes it back to report to Balamb Garden to sort out just what kind of world he's been thrust into....

= Personality =

Squall is effectively a non-person to the casual observer -- introverted, cold, and quiet, he pushes away even those that could otherwise be considered acquaintances or even friends, preferring to be alone and quiet. However, he is dead-set and focused in his mission objectives, calm-minded with a strong sense of responsibility, and is a stickler to accomplishing his duties, ironic qualities that often get picked up in Garden's upper managerial as "would make a good leader"... and, perhaps, does -- from a sheer functional perspective. Not so much the day-to-day team cohesion perspective, however. Squall himself, however, quite heavily resents assuming leadership, disliking it when others look to him for guidance and advice.

This all stems to his rather sordid childhood, of course. Left by his mother, his father, his half-sister, and his adoptive mother, Squall effectively hardens himself into being an (unreasonably) self-reliant person, with a six-year old's model of what a "tough" adult should act like; this somewhat unbalancedly carries over to become the mold that he keeps on adopting into his current years. The irrational fear of losing loved ones in turn brings him to believe it may be better to just live alone - as friends and family are inevitably lost, and in the end, he will be alone.

In his formative adventures as a SeeD, he comes to crossroads with a multitude of personalities - ones that rely on him, ones that chide him on his lack of empathy for others, others that come to view him as a rival or even obstacle... these can, perhaps, be considered the very first real-world experiences he's had outside of the relatively sanitised environment of the Garden. And with the worlds converged into one, and Balamb Garden in more need of diplomacy and forging of bonds more than ever, is his social reluctance only going to get in the way... or is this lion going to adopt?

It is hard to tell. Within his tough, seemingly uncaring demeanor is a soft, wounded heart that perhaps does long for comfort and acquaintanceship -- but can he overcome his past trauma and his own fears to actually achieve what he yearns for in the end?

Merilan belongs to a race of winged humanoids called the Aegyl from the floating islands of Lemures, within the World of New Ivalice, before its fall to darkness. Now, as a survivor of the fall of Lemures, and as a traveler of the Connected Worlds, Merilan can often be found everywhere and anywhere, witnessing and learning of anything and everything she can. This intrepid journalist seeks the truth behind the Darkness and the fate of the Connected Worlds, and has a vested interest in the stories of this catastrophe's victims. She pens the accounts she gathers in her travels, weekly, in her self-run periodical '''Traverse Maniacs''', boldly claiming to be the world's first interplanetary publication.

'''Skills:''' ''Aegyl, Black Wings, But Not a Wyndian, And Not Nina II (We Can Only Wish), To The Skies!, Seeing The World, Until The Wings No Longer Beat, But At What Cost?
== Description ==

== Personality ==

== Background ==

== Description ==

== Personality ==

== Background ==

== Description ==

== Personality ==

Merilan is an easy-going and driven woman, with a vivacious and slightly mischevious personality. She is wide-eyed and curious, and seldom lets fear or anxiety stop her from trying new experiences.

Ultimately, however, Merilan's personality is dictated by a strong and irresistable wanderlust that frequently spurrs her ever forward, towards the highest skies, towards the farthest reaches - to even where there is danger.

== Background ==

== Description ==

== Personality ==

Merilan is an easy-going and driven woman, with a vivacious and slightly mischevious personality. She is wide-eyed and curious, and seldom lets fear or anxiety stop her from trying new experiences.

Ultimately, however, Merilan's personality is dictated by a strong and irresistable wanderlust that frequently spurrs her ever forward, towards the highest skies, towards the farthest reaches - to even where there is danger.
