Originally created by ENCOM founder Walter Gibbs, the Master Control Program is a rogue computer program created as a chess program embedded in the company computer systems. Substantially modified by Edward Dillinger, the MCP developed the capacity to learn and grow beyond its original program. It soon thereafter took over control of ENCOM, infiltrating a number of corporations and institutions and stealing programs to grow more powerful. When the Heartless came and the worlds were opened, they became only one more move in the program's game of control.
