− | == History ==
| |
− |
| |
− | Portobello was born in the Skycity of Bhujerba, he was part of a large family of Moogles who were merchants. Not too keen on following the family business he decided to get an apprenticeship with his great uncle Shiitake and become an Engineer. His great uncle and his younger repair crew members taught him all they could about engines, machines and how they functioned. When his apprenticeship was finished he decided to cut his teeth by working at the Aerodrome airship docks in Rabanastre, maintaining and repairing the Sky Ferries that traveled between various points in Ivalice. Portobello's life settled into a comfortable routine for a while until the comming of the Heartless. Reports of whole regions of Ivalice being devoured by a storm of darkness had made him realize he might need to begin searching for some safer place to live. Though when he began to set off outside of Rabanstre, there was no longer the Ivalice he once recognized. The world he knew had changed to something different, an amalgamation of various leftover pieces of other worlds that managed to survive and merge together.

− | While this was a bit of a shock at first for Portobello, he also saw it as an opportunity he would not have had before. Before him were places that were once pieces of unseen and unknown worlds, and perhaps within those places there was technology and knowledge to be found. He set off traveling to wherever he could, learning as much as he was able to along the way and as a result sometimes winding up in places others didn't want to him to be. His mechanical aptitude allowed him to quickly gain an understanding of whatever strange devices he came across, provided they were not too arcane or heavily magical in nature. Surviving on one's own was not easy for him but somehow he managed to get to the next town or settlement without getting slain by a monster or having run afoul with some dangerous people. He eventually learned enough to where he could make a small living repairing an assortment of items, traveling from location to location and peddling his services.

| |
− | Once again he started to settle into a routine lifestyle, figuring he'd found his niche. Though it wasn't before long that his sleep became troubled. He kept having haunting visions of Bhujerba, feeling something calling out for help to him in a place enveloped in darkness. These dreams were reoccurring and he always woke up with a strong compulsion to find some way to reach out and pull Bhujerba itself from wherever it had disappeared to. He couldn't understand this feeling, even though he regretted his family and hometown being gone he had not been feeling any major state of grief over what happened. He figured he must have had some sort of greed driven compulsion to want to bring back Bhujerba, perhaps to take advantage of the Magicite mines if there were no inhabitants left in the skycity. Though he knew monetary desire was not what was driving him to want to accomplish this. With all other rational reasoning for this course of action ruled out, there was only the answer his heart had given him: To Inspire Hope.

| |
− | Portobello remembered how Archadian rule over Rabanstre had left the city in the doldrums compared to how it previously was. And the subsequent arrival of the heartless seemed to make matters even worse. Perhaps if he were to accomplish something unbelievable as restoring a place long thought lost to the darkness it would give them the motivation they needed to take control of their lives, and not let their so-called 'betters' use them like pawns on a chessboard. He noticed a lot of places in the world of ruin seemed to be suffering under the burden of lost hope as well, and perhaps there were others ways to inspire them to help make changes for the better. Though before he could do this he needed to find out exactly where all the trouble started and how all the ill fortune that has befallen these assembled lands was connected. Thus he set out to gather information and research the problem better so he could find a solid solution.

− | == Personality ==
| |
− |
| |
− | Portobello is the type of Moogle who feels actions always speak louder than words. Though that hardly means he's at a loss for them, though he tries to pick his words carefully when he speaks. He knows others may not always be receptive to his ideals, especially if they're counterproductive to the goals of certain unscrupulous individuals. He has a keen eye for detail and is meticulous when it comes to finding information about something before coming to a decision or judging things, be it a scenario, place, person or thing. Because of this he may come off as shy or withdrawn at first, before eventually becoming more talkative and social afterwards. While he has no trouble helping others if they're truly in need, he is somewhat hesitant to accept the aid of others in return until he feels they are completely trustworthy and able enough to assist him. All of this is due to the fact that his social skills run the same as his method for approaching mechanical problems: A full diagnostic is required before handling things.

− |
| |
− | While Portobello likes to take his time, he knows time isn't always on his side. As such he's always trying to balance time with accuracy and thoroughness, and one of his major anxieties is fearing he'll either run out of time or botch something vital when in a situation where he's under pressure. When not stressed he tends to be a mellow, easy going sort who isn't very outspoken or brazen. He's got a warm personality even though he'll be slow to fully trust anyone, but he's never the kind to hold grudges. The only pet peeve he has been known to have is when others do not take him seriously due to his appearance. It was a bit of a shock to Portobello that some people outside of Ivalice based lands treated him in a condescending manner due to being a Moogle, it's something that annoys him considerably. He's perceptive enough to spot most shady types unless they're exceedingly prudent and clever. He keeps his true feelings and aspirations well guarded, only sharing them with his closest friends and confidants. Those people know how passionate he is about working to bring hope to the disheartened in the world of ruin.

− | == Abilities ==
| |
− |
| |
− | As an Engineer Portobello is capable of repairing, modifying and if need be dismantling many different kinds of machinery and devices. His travels have allowed him to expand his expertise beyond the type of technology found in Ivalice. As long as it is not some high arcane precursor level technology or super advanced ( Interstellar Spacecraft and the like ) he's capable of working with it. If given enough time and resources he could probably design and build things as well. He has some rudimentary piloting skills with civilian level crafts, though only with vehicles from Ivalice or ones designed in a similar fashion.

| |
− | Portobello has never received any combat training. He had to learn how to fend for himself on his own. Thankfully one of his owninventions had proved pivotal to his survival out in the wilds. His backpack houses a machine he calls the the Ultimate Tool Making Apparatus ( or Ultoolma for short ), it comes equipped with various accessories and many sets of arms, each one having a different tool attachment on it. Most of them are mundane tools used offensively, such as a power drill, a cutting saw, a wielding torch, a plasma cutter and a set of extending mechanical arms which have a lot of lifting power. They also come equipped with a small booster rockets to lift him into the air for a short time. He controls the arms from a set of consoles attached to the sides of his belt. Given the amount of time he's used this device in his work, he's become very precise in manipulating them in combat with uncanny accuracy.
| |
− |
| |
− | Outside of defending himself, this device usually sees more mundane uses, though it allows him to do on the spot repairs in the heat of battle to other people's armor or even make subtle changes to the overall design of one's equipment to enhance one's performance in battle ( until said minor modifications wear down ). When his utility pack is not strapped to his back he's a very graceful flyer, he practices flying every day to help keep in shape ( even if he worries that flying seems like such a feminine passtime for a Moogle ) as his wings are strong enough to carry him about in the air for a while.
