Characters

When worlds fall to darkness, their citizens are often drawn into eternal slumber or transformed non-sentient Heartless. However, those with a strong heart - be it one of Light or Darkness - can often find their way out of it. Sometimes these journeys are long-lived - sometimes they are short.

Those whose worlds became the World of Ruin are guided by their World Heart - which often manifests as white light surrounding them - and are drawn into what remains of that world. It may be a sudden awakening on the beach of Costa Del Sol, or appearing within one of the many Cids' latest invention, but they find themselves once again conscious within that world.

Others may find their way lit by other means. A prayer that goes out to them, an exceptionally strong thought, or perhaps their own longing for a world to live within. They might even be picked up by one of Montressor's space-faring vessels. Often, those not drawn to the remains of their own world find themselves on the threshold of Traverse Town.

Those with dark hearts whose desires are strong enough may find themselves willing a one-time Corridor of Darkness to open through which to step onto the Crossroads, a place from whence they will choose their own path.

However, the further one goes towards the Realm of Darkness, the harder it becomes. And once one reaches even the edge (the 'coast') of darkness, it beings neigh-impossible to escape even for beings such as the Shadow Lords. There is much preparation and things such as Master-level Sorcery required to escape it.

Worlds

At times, those worlds which have fallen to darkness can be lit with the light of Hope. Perhaps many children wished for the same thing within that world. Perhaps the Heartless menace has ended. Whatever the means, it is possible for those worlds to be revived to their former glory, or to fall to another world as a World Shard. It is said that those who wield a 'keyblade' can resurrect those worlds.
