OVERVIEW: The Shinra Electric Corporation appears to have grown out of a home industry in discovering and exploiting electrical power. Using their Mako Reactors, they claim to have an infinitely sustainable, renewable form of energy. Detractors claim that the Reactors operate upon siphoning the life out of the planet, preventing plantlife from growing and causing monster infestations. I don't have the ability to see if these things are true without some extensive espionage work. Shinra guards their secrets pretty well.
Using the capital leverage from the electrical monopoly, they also provide for the technological requirements of the local populace. Their technology level is approximate to our own, with some unusual spikes. Wit htheir extensive wealth and military power, they are considered basically supreme in their area, being the replacement for almost all local governments.
They have opposition in the terrorist group AVALANCHE, which has mixed feelings amongst the populace. Some say they are eco-crazy extremists, others say they are fighting to save the planet. I have not yet made contact with these guys to get their side of the story.
Shinra has extreme military power. They have a regular army, as well as extensive forces based out of the port of Junon. The massive artillery cannon inset there points at extreme investment into military force. They also have an elite special forces unit called SOLDIER. Rumors have it that all members of SOLDIER possess extensive combat ability and mastery of Materia, small gems that give their user command over magical powers.
A third organization to watch out for is the infamous Turks organization. It's said that they do recruiting for SOLDIER, but they also appear to engage in intelligence work. The man who contacted me might have been a member of this organization.
