Midgar The last day of the World.
“LT! The defence lines are being breached. The heartless and Wutai forces are pushing into the city!”
Montag could see it on his helmet's HUD the defence lines were crumbling after four years they were just starting to give out. He didn't know if they would survive but still? He wasn't about to go quietly, no he was not going to go quietly.
“Deploy Death sweeper and grunts to fill the breach tell the remaining men to fall back to the next line.”
Montag looks down his scope there had to be someone controlling these heartless and he sees them a wutaian solider of some sort. He wasn't sure but he lined up the shot, the world seemed to slow down for a moment as he pulled the trigger. The man fell dead even as the sound of the rifle shot registered. Some do the heartless started going out of control but it was not enough. He knew it would not be enough, but he'd denied one of the enemy from seeing their victory.
It should have been three in the afternoon but the sun had vanis4ehd the shadows were closing in upon them all. Contacts were going dead. The drones did their job without complaint or concern the mechanical weapons bought the surviving troopers time to regroup for all that it would do. The upper plate was being over run. There was no way to run, no where to hide.
“FIRING Square formation!”
The remaining troopers formed into a rough square to cover each-others backs as they kept shooting the shadows were closing in but what could they do? Run would mean being consumed. There was no where to go cept the mobs of heartless. It was futile but what could they do but fight? Montag dropped his sniper rifle grabbing a fallen machine gun and just tearing into the ranks of the heartless. The roar of gunfire and the clatter of brass on the black top was all that Montag could year till something came over the din.
“There's too many sir....I'm going to.”
“NO DONT RUN”
It was too late one trooper broke ranks and all they could hear his screams as the heartless over came him like a dark tide the only light came from their helmets, the muzzle flashes of their weapons and the eyes of the heartless.
“It's over!”
“I know that! We ARE NOT GOING TO DIE ON OUR KNEES WE DIE FIGHTING! I WILL NOT ”
Montag empties the clip of the rifle into the tides of heartless as the final night was falling upon his world the world started to come unglued and without thinking he grabbed the nearest trooper.
“Do not let go.”
What was the point? Time seemed to stop? All he knew was he was hanging on to his comrade and not letting go. How long had passed he did not know as he and over a dozen of the defenders of the upper plate washed up on the shores of a beach he didn't know. Most were getting up coughing up water or recovering gear. Montag looked up at the strange sky over head and he pulled off his helmet.
“SOUND OFF!”
The survivors sounded off 15 in all not counting him self it was something at least . One of the troopers came up to Montag with his own helmet lost in the chaos of the fall of their world.
“Sir? Where the heck are we.”
“I don't know Smith, I got no idea where, but there's a town over there it's a good as place as any. All right grab any useful gear and we're heading out. Keep alert, if we survived this some of the Wutai troops did. Keep Frosty, I'm not losing anyone else today now lets move!”
