Traverse Town - District 1, 7:40 PM
As usual, Traverse Town kept itself busy at almost all hours of the day. The distinct lack of daylight at any time really threw off one's perception. At least initially, but those who have lived here for a while have eventually gotten used to the grind and can accurate tell when to go rest in their homes. And it would seem that now was right about that time.
Most of the shops and cafes were closing for the day...night....whatever! But to one such shopkeeper, an odd sight hindered his own progress. He was an older man. Human, about past his forties, slightly graying brown hair(something he was not proud of!), and a bushy mustache to match. Probably had already had a family with kids all grown up and everything, and lived his life as normally as he could considering the state of the world(s). But on this night, his eyes could not help but notice something strange as he turned, in the middle of locking the doors to his place of business.
A girl.
A strange looking girl with a blank expression on her face, looking utterly lost. Some of those wandering the streets still gave her a wide berth, whispering things to each other, but this man had no idea of such things. The girl had dark skin, strikingly long silver or white hair, and pointy ears, marking her as a non-human of some sort. Perhaps an elf? Her eyes though...they were empty. Empty and gray. Sensing something fundamentally wrong, the man finished locking up before he turned and hailed the girl. "Excuse me miss, ya look a bit lost!" He called out. His statement got the girl's attention who just slowly stared in his direction, adopting a mildly confused expression.
"......?" Silently, she tilted her head slightly and pointed at herself, as if asking 'You mean me?'. The older man nodded, wiping his hands off before moving to approach. "Ya look out of it, is what I'm saying. Maybe I can help ya with somethin'" He asked gesturing with a hand as he spoke. "It's gettin' late. ...Not that anyone'd be able to tell without lookin' at a clock, but anyway- Is there some place in particular yer' lookin' for?" His question drew a blank stare from the girl who shook her head slowly, deciding to speak up this time.
"I...I...don't...know..." She replied slowly, as if she had to remember how to speak. Her answer struck the man as odd and he crossed his arms, harumphing in puzzlement. This was definitely out of the ordinary. Even for Traverse Town. "Ya don't say..." He paused to look over the girl for a moment. She wore what looked like a hospital gown. It looked like it was marred slightly with blood stains here and there, but she didn't look hurt at all...did she escape from a hospital? He couldn't imagine such a case. "...If ya don't mind me askin', what's yer name, girl? Maybe I can find someone that oughta know ya." Another suggestion from the man, this one offered somewhat hopefully, but it too was met with a painfully long moment of silence.
The girl blinked slowly at the question, thinking on the subject for what must have been a minute or so.
"...I.....don't know." She answered again, her expression going dour at that. Who was she exactly? A name? ...Did she have a name?
A worrying answer. A girl with no name, a blood marred hospital gown, this just seemed all sorts of suspicious. His rational mind told him that maybe this was an issue that was /way/ above his pay grade, but...no one else dared to approach this girl and find out what was wrong. A quick glance around proved that fact. People were minding their own business in an almost artificial way as they vacated the area, eager to go on with their lives. This drew a sigh from him. "Aw hell, well I can't rightly leave ya here knowin' this now." He admitted with a sigh, running his hand through his hair in resignation. He took another glance at the girl before him then. Her gaze was lowered to the ground, not meeting his eyes.
"Come with me. Ya look like a mess. I'm bettin' you could use some food and a bath too. ...And some clothes." The man smiled wryly at that. "My daughter's just about yer size actually. I'm willin' to bet she's got some clothes that might fit." And a reassuring smile at that. "Whaddya say?"
"......Okay." The girl with no name nodded, raising her gaze a little and smiling an unsure smile. "....." Nothing more was said and the two set off.
"Hell, I know my wife's gonna murder me for this." He groused after as he led on. "But hell, a good deed's a good deed."
Random kindness from a complete stranger... Perhaps this girl was more fortunate than she knew.
Well, when you hit bottom, the only place left to go from there is up.
Right?
