Locke Cole makes his living finding and selling the treasures of the past (and, when times are tough, the treasures of the present). He was an experienced adventurer who traveled much of his world, which made adapting to the changes wrought by the World of Ruin that much easier. Despite his dubious occupation, Locke is ultimately a good man with a strong sense of justice. This led him to join the Returners and fight against the Empire. Locke is sometimes quick-tempered and impulsive, more inclined to follow his heart than any kingdom or law. He is also protective -- perhaps too protective -- of people around him, even if he just met them.

History

Pre-Darkness Events

Locke grew up in Kohlingen, one of the cities in the Kingdom of Figaro. He was never wealthy growing up and lost his parents to illness as a teenager. This meant that he had to learn to take care of himself quickly. He always had a sense of adventure and wanderlust, which he quickly put to good use. Locke took to exploring nearby ruins and recovering relics from them.

As he reached adulthood, he picked up a unique set of skills. Locke became skilled at getting into places locked away for a long time; he was in excellent shape, necessary to work his way through trap-riddled ruins. He developed a savvy approach. Unfortunately, these same skills could break into old and new buildings alike. He did not, at first, do such things. However, growing up poor instilled a sense of justice in him. He began to see the differences in power between rich citizens and poor citizens.

After a particularly egregious case of a rich shop owner ripping off some poorer workers selling their goods, Locke decided to get even. He broke into the man's house and stole what money he felt they should have made -- and some for himself. Locke was never caught when he did this; he was never caught when he went after other rich citizens. Rumors, however, began to spread and take a life of their own. He was seen as far more unsavory a character than he actually was.

This all came to a head when he began to date Rachel, the daughter of a local merchant. The two fell in love; she learned to love exploring ruins with him and he took her with him. Locke promised to protect her on these outings; it was the light, youthful promise he never thought would amount to anything. It grew in gravity one day, when Rachel fell in one of the caves he entered

She injured herself gravely; a blow to her head caused short-term memory loss. Her father was outraged and ordered Locke away, after attacking him. Locke was forced out of Kohlingen and took to traveling the world. Out there, he saw the growing Empire and its injustices. He became more experienced, skilled with a blade and at more ruins and places to enter. He returned to Kohlingen some time later.

He found that Rachel had died, but only shortly after getting her memories back, in an Imperial attack. Anguished and angered, Locke left Kohlingen again. He swore revenge on the Empire, as it it could somehow make up for her death. Ultimately, Locke realized he failed to protect her. He met with the leader of the Returners, Banon, who offered him a way that he could protect others: by joining them.

Locke did. He worked with the Returners, scouting the Empire's lines and infiltrating their cities. His skills as a thief and relic hunter proved useful as a spy and scout, too. He ventured past Figaro and the mountains, to places like Narshe, making contacts. It was during this time that he met Edgar Rene Figaro, the king of that kingdom, and became friends with him in their work together.

Locke discovered the fate of Terra thanks to a Returner contact in Narshe. He went after her, when she fled from Arvis's home, and with the help of the Moogles, saved her. Locke and Terra ventured to Figaro Castle. There, they enlisted Edgar's help, and ultimately made their way through the mountains to the Returners' hideout (plus one Sabin). When the attack on South Figaro became known, it became clear that it fell on Locke to go into the occupied city.

He disrupted their efforts their. His sabotage slowed the Imperial Army down; he made good his escape carefully. As he left the city, he met one Celes Chere. He freed her from her bonds -- and helped escape with her. As they left the city, the world became unraveled. The darkness overtook their home. The next thing Locke knew, he was awake in Traverse Town.

Post-Darkness Events

Locke awoke in Traverse Town. He reconnected with several other Returners and wrote to Banon, acquiring orders for the time being. He and Celes were ultimately sent to Balamb Garden, after word of it went to the leader of the Returners. They met Jean Faraven, Quistis Trepe, and Sarafina Carenze there. Some discussion created an alliance between the Returners and SEED, which included an irregular expeditionary force created to investigate the nature of their new world.

Capabilities and Combat

Locke is an agile, fast fighter. Locke is best with a small, light blade such as a dagger or a short sword. He prefers fast, slashing motions with a blade; he is not the sort to carry a large two-handed weapon. He tends to be accurate, preferring to score several hits or one particularly well-aimed strike to a vital area. He learned to fight on the street, in Kohlingen's shadier sides and on the mean streets of Zozo. Locke might be a man of honor, but he fights hard and he fights rough. Monsters in caves know no honor; Imperial soldiers often prefer brutal practicality.

He is not the sort to wear heavy armor and is not particularly heavily built. Locke is about dodging, parrying, and blocking blows when they come in. The upside to this is that Locke is an acrobatic fighter. He can leap from rooftop to rooftop; he can jump high into the air; he can zip across a battlefield. He can fight opponents in the air with a fast-moving, high-leaping, kinetic style.

He also carries a boomerang. While he prefers wielding a blade, he knows that sometimes a good treasure hunter needs a ranged weapon -- sometimes you need to hit something at a distance. At present. Locke does not have any magic; some day he might get access to magicite and that might change. Nonetheless, he tends to be similar as a magician; he is not about crushing magical powers, but accurate spellcasting and getting out of harm's way when spells are slung at him.

The Terrible Ochu July 3rd, 2013 Rumors had it that the terrible Lord Ochu dwells within the middle of Giza Plains, making it difficult for merchants to transport goods. A team of adventurers journey to get the beast out.
