Magic is a force that exists in all worlds. It is mostly a neutral force that can be wielded in a variety of ways. While this force is usually embodied in different forms depending on the world, magic is still essentially the force that makes it all run. When one uses magic, they essentially use a method to tap into this force

Overall, most magic users are mages and use magic to take command of a particular element for a brief moment. An example of this is when one uses a fire spell to cast a fireball attack or when one uses a cure spell in order to briefly speed up a healing process. This is the most common type of magic.

Sorcerers

Sorcerers are magic users who can use magical power to bend the laws of the world around them. Examples of such things are giving life to inanimate objects and creating impossibilities. These are rare and few in between, and it is a magic that is rarely used for good. Malificent is one of the most well-known Sorcerers, along with a man named Merlin. Often, there is a counterpart to each - but there where there are not, worlds often find themselves unbalanced towards darkness.

Magic Methods

There are many methods attaining magic as well. In some worlds, natural magic only came to some of those born with this gift, such as the Black Mages from FF9, or the Sorceress from FF8. But often in those worlds, humans would find a way to reach into this dominion - such as Quasi-Magic, Materia, or even going so far as to Crystallize Espers. In this setting, the source of origin (series/game) defines whether or not someone is innately capable of magic or not. However, with enough resources, the difference between innate magical power and quasi-magic is negligible. But to meet the power of a true Sorcerer is neigh-impossible.
