History

Once, there was an enchanted dominion, ruled over by a good and noble King, and a kind and gentle Queen. After a time, they had a child, whom they named Aurora, after the dawn, because she brought light to their lives. To celebrate the birth, they invited all of the noble personages to the court to pay homage to the Princess. Among the personages, they invited the three Good Faeries. There was a fourth faerie, an evil faerie, but they did not invite her; for she was spiteful, petty and cruel merely for the joy of it.

Two of the three faeries blessed the Princess, each bestowing upon her a Gift; one per faerie, no more, no less. The first gift was supernatural beauty. "One gift, beauty rare, Gold of sunshine in her hair, Lips that shame the red, red rose, She'll walk in springtime wherever she goes!". The second gift, was the gift of a magical voice. "One gift, the gift of song, Melody your whole life long! The nightingale her troubadour, Bringing his sweet serenade to her door." With the latter gift, she would tame many woodland friends later in her life, simply with the enchanted power of her melodic voice.

Before the third gift could be bestowed, however, the evil faerie Maleficient invited herself to the party, furious that she had not been invited. She bestowed the gift she would have given if she had been invited. She cursed the young princess to die, upon her 16th birthday, when she would prick her finger upon a spinning wheel. There was one good faerie left, however. She bestowed her blessing; a resistance to Maleficient's magic...so that when the curse would be felt, that Princess Aurora would not die, but instead fall into an enchanted sleep until true love's kiss might awaken her.

In horror at these events, the King and Queen sent their daughter to be raised by the Good Faeries...and it is thus that the real tale begins...

For most of her life, Princess Aurora believed herself to be Briar Rose, a foundling peasant girl. She was raised by what she believed were three kindly old women of the forest, wonderful dears who loved her as if she truly were their own child, who taught her decorum and grace and morality and manners. They gave her a simple life, a humble life, but filled with all of the truly important things; not the least of which was love, and family. They never, in the entire time she knew them, acted in a selfish manner, or in anything less then the highest moral principles. Sure, they could squabble over the colors pink and blue sometimes; but what family does not have minor squabbles?

The kindly women bestowed in Briar Rose a deep compassion for all living things. There is good in all people, and we must not wish pain or suffering upon them. When we find ourselves in times of trial, we must show patience, faith, hope and preserverence. Such things will sustain us, and perhaps help them, as well. If others wish us ill, we must try very hard not to be grumpy, and to be as kind and patient as we can - like the old adage, 'pray for those who persecute you'. We should not oppose evil by emulating evil, but by trying to be ever more good! Of course, in hindsight, it made sense to Briar Rose why her kindly dears would have spent so much time teaching her morality and ethics...because they were the Good Faeries, forces of magic and goodness itself, incapable of using magic for evil intent, or of doing evil. They raised Briar Rose to be a good soul; innocent and virtuous, free of any darkness or evil in her heart. She was, however, quite lonely.

She would dream of meeting a prince, and sing songs about it to all of her friends in the forest; for after all, she wished no living creature harm, and found that, when treated properly, almost all living creatures could become her friends. No prince came, of course. So she kept up good cheer, was patient, and kept on with the chores and the singing. One day, eventually, she did meet a man; someone she knew from a dream. And he was wonderful! But she did not wish to be disobedient to Flora, Fauna and Merryweather, and so rushed away. But despite being flustered, she agreed to see him again, if he would come to meet her that night.

The rest of the story is as it was in the several Kingdom Hearts prequels, and the movie "Sleeping Beauty". The actual plot, and the basics of it, are familiar to all. More important are Aurora's motivations, and thoughts on the matter.

Aurora was not pleased upon finding that she was a princess. On the contrary, its promises of wealth and power were less then nothing to her. Less then nothing, because in order to be nothing, she would have had to at least consider and discard the notions. She was simply not tempted in the slightest, nor did it occur to her to be tempted. Her concern was for being true to the man she had met, the man from her dreams. She could not bring it in herself to disobey Flora, Fauna and Merryweather, but neither could she be happy with what they offered; it broke her heart. Fortunately, the man to whom she was betrothed was the prince she had met. She ended up with the best of both worlds; and did not have to disobey or disgrace those who had raised her, or disobey the stirrings and commands of her own heart. This is always how life is. Do the right thing, no matter how difficult it may seem, and things will turn out in the end, if you have patience, preserverence, and faith.

Being royalty, of course, did not bother her; much evil had been done in the world, and she would help others however she could, and if it was her duty to be a Princess, then she could help others all the more. But it would have been hollow and meaningless if it had come about by abandoning her heart's desire. And so she ruled beside Prince Philip, for a time. She did her best to try and help heal the land and its people. The Heartless had come, of course, brought in by the evil faerie Maleficient since the day when she had been born, and so of course there was much to be done. Her husband the Prince would fight them. And that was a battle that needed to be fought, of course. But to her a more important battle was looming; the moral battle. For the ultimate battle, she felt, would not be fought against the Heartless with swords, but for hope and goodness and compassion within the hearts of every person in her Kingdom. If they lived good lives, if they had good hearts, filled with compassion towards their family, their neighbors...even their enemies, even the heartless, then there would be nothing the Heartless could do to them. She felt certain of this. She felt certain the true battle was not a physical one, but a moral one.

Time passed. She learned ever more about ruling her people. Prince Philip was often away, fighting the Heartless or on various adventures, so many of the royal duties often fell to her. She also learned more about magic; Merryweather in particular trusted her enough to lend Aurora her wand for extended periods of time (as seen in "Keys to the Kingdom", a short sequel in "Disney Princess Enchanted Tales" set a little while after the movie). There were some rather large magical disasters at first, such as accidentally turning a farmer into a duck, but nothing that could not be reversed, and learned from and prevented with further magical lessons. Her self-confidence and convictions only grew with experience and independence. She still had a firm believe in the power of virtue, and an iron-clad conviction in the ability of truth and love to overcome evil even where force could not, but it was a conviction increasingly born of experience, rather then childhood lessons or idealism.

Her convictions were not enough, however, in the face of Maleficient's hordes of heartless and unholy power. Her castle and her husband survived, however, and the fight goes on. She remains convinced the true battle cannot be waged merely with swords, or magical spells and powers, but only in the heart; by the good doing good, and refusing to give into evil, even if that meant not doing evil to the evil. She has faith that, though it will take great patience, all will be well.

Personality

Princess Aurora is a classic, old-fashioned Disney Princess. For better or for worse, she meets many of the classical standards of beauty and innocence. This is part of what makes her a Princess of Heart, and one of the Seven Hearts of Pure Light. She is innocence personified, a friend to all living things. No matter what happens to her, or what is thrown against her, she remains good and kind, almost impossibly good, more akin to what you would expect from some sort of mythical saint then an ordinary, every-day person. She is also the essence of classical femininity; slightly shy at times, but sophisticated, ladylike, full of charm and poise and grace, who thinks of others before she thinks of herself. She has a deep abiding inner beauty, of which her physical beauty is but a pale reflection.

This beauty and goodness does not imply passivity, however, and neither is it born out of a weakness of personality - but out of a strength of character. She will not do evil to resist evil - because in a small way, that is to validate the philosophy behind the evil, and in the end, it is not the evil person she opposes ... but the evil itself that they fight for or represent. She can be demure, innocent, and shy; but this is because she chooses to be that way - because classiness and morality matter more to her then worldly gain and worldly perceptions. She often chooses not to fight - but it is not because she is weak, or is unintelligent, or is incapable of fighting. Instead, she believes that it is best to have patience and faith, and do -good- to evil, to return hatred with love, injustice with justice, to win over your enemies with proactive kindness. Not pacifism at all; but a proactive way of waging moral battles whenever possible. She always strives to exhibit poise, dignity, grace, empathy and generosity in everything she does.
