Cast of Characters: Shiki Misaki, Neku Sakuraba, Reize Seatlan

It's not possible for Shiki Misaki to get by without at least some bad dreams. She is, at the end of the day, a young girl, a normal person, and not totally able to cope as well as some heroes might.

As herself and Reize camp between the Mythril Mines and Junon, following their trek through the caves, her sleep is not a comfortable one.

She's floating, legs kicking at nothing as a tangle of stone, plants and ruined buildings circle around her. The familiar sights of Shibuya are crushed up and packed like a block of recycled cans, but all of this is just a backdrop.

Nobody is holding onto her, but Neku is in front of her. He stands on top of a heap of junk, a mountain over a bottomless drop. His hair is black, eyes glowing yellow. The familiar ball of blue psychokinetic energy is in his outstretched hand.

"Please, Neku," she says, desperately clutching at the invisible force around her throat, crushing her windpipe, blurring her vision. Uselessly, she gasps out...

"Don't kill me!"

He doesn't acknowledge her. Instead, in Higashizawa's droning bass, he says, and then repeats in that crazy dream-logic way: "Time for a taste test!"

And then the Midgar Zolom is underneath her, and plants and stones are rushing by in a blur, and Neku and Reize are standing there watching her fall...

And she's sucked into the slimy gullet of the hungry snake. Its throat feels like the hot asphalt of the Scramble Crossing street, and she plunges into a burning darkness that feels like TV static and bile...

Shiki wakes up in her tent, mouth and throat dry from sucking in huge lungfuls of air. She looks around and crawls outside, onto the grass, body buzzing, head thrumming. It's cold and the grass under her knees is damp, and there's no buildings in sight, nobody but herself...

And again, Shiki Misaki cries.
