Profile

The Chicken Knives are spoken of mostly in story. Weapons crafted not to absorb the strength or courage of their wielder but rather their fearfulness, every step you take away from your opponent is said to only sharpen the blade and infuse it with stronger magic. With that in mind the spineless pickpocket Gallus was in many ways the ideal candidate to own one, not that it makes him feel any better. He stole a Chicken Knife by accident (or so he complains) and having it has troubled him ever since. Every time he runs far enough away from someone trying to maim him for the mystical blade (which happens a lot) somebody ELSE seems to want to take it from him, dead or alive. Any time he's forced to defend himself the sheer amount of running away he's accumulated has made the weapon fearsomely powerful, which in turn makes it more appealing to the sort of people Gallus wants to avoid. Truly, he's stuck between a rock and a hard place: to run and keep the weapon ruining his life, or be killed for it. Pity him.

Background

Sometimes in the world it feels like you're either rich enough to afford a rocket car made of solid gold or too poor to eat. Gallus is, and always has been, the latter and like many turned to petty crime to make his way. The only problem was he was awful at it. Far too sheepish and yellow-bellied to pull off any big heists, he instead made ends meet by penny-pinching and purse dipping. Far from the scurrilous rogue, Gallus would have so easily faded into obscurity if it weren't for /that night/.

You see on /this/ night Gallus decided he was going to do something different. Something bold. Something... well maybe not bold, because that would be terrifying. SOMETHING, anyway. In any case he wound up stealing from a travelling merchant. To Gallus's credit it was actually a fairly well researched plan: he skulked around for a while to see what the merchant had to sell, waited until the seller's back was turned and then grabbed the first thing he could reach and ran.

The result was the Chicken Knife -- a curious item by any standard. Rare, but generally thought off as useless and hardly ever used by any self-respecting warrior. They were weapons that turned fear into power. Well... kind of. With every step you ran away from your opponent some magical enchantment on the weapon made it better, sleeker, sharper and more potent. Gallus slowly began to realize this, as when he ran the hell away from anyone trying to collect debts from him the weapon did a hell of a lot better after he'd eventually been cornered than when he plucked up enough courage to use it without taking a step.

Simply put, whenever Gallus used the blade when he HADN'T been running a mile it couldn't cut butter, but after he'd ran for his life it could slice the breeze itself into confused zephyrs.

Naturally a weapon like that earned a reputation. Rumor started to break out that Gallus had his hands on a weapon of great power -- few realizing, due to his natural tendency to flee from anything bigger than a breadbox, that it was actually useless in somebody not a complete wuss. The further and harder Gallus ran the more impressive his feats became, creating quite the vicious circle. Soon Gallus's victories over goons and thugs become common knowledge, making him something of a folk hero among his fellow downtrodden peasants in the world.

Fortunately it wasn't long before the world went to hell anyway. Gallus was saved the fate of spiraling through the darkness by being TORN from the world and winding up in Traverse Town without his consent. He suspects the Chicken Knife is probably to blame, throwing him into ANOTHER terrifying situation both to save the wielder that's making it so powerful and improve it's chances of becoming an awesomely powerful blade again in turn.
