Grimoires

Sorcerers have long been known as much for the power of their enchanted objects as their own abilities. Grimoires are as much of a tool of the trade of Sorcery as a hammer for a smith. The purpose of a Grimoire is to allow the Sorcerer to augment a specific power, or to allow an application of his power to be maintained long after the Sorcerer had left.

The original Grimoires were books, and are still one of the most traditional forms that they are found. They are not limited to this form, however. Some Grimoires have been designed as neckpieces, or even the layout of an entire city.

Properties

A Grimoire is most often used to create and maintain a stable Sorcery-level magical effect. Powerful curses or other effects are the most common uses of these objects. A Grimoire can almost always only sustain one such effect, but the power of the object can be such that the effect can span a great deal of distance. The power of the Grimoire is not infallible, either: Many of these devices have ways to avoid their power, should one know the secret… But these secrets are often jealously guarded by their creators to protect themselves from their own creations.

Grimoire Creation

The essence of a Grimoire requires sacrifice. Whether of the creator or of another (willing or unwilling!), a Grimoire will require an essence or an object that bears some kind of affinity towards the effect that the sorcerer is trying to create. For example, a Grimoire used to create a permanent thunderstorm might use a piece of the Elemental Crystal of Air, or perhaps the voice of a powerful Fiend of Air. World Shards in particular are prized for this purpose, as these shards often bear powerful resonances that serve perfectly in this capacity. The opinions of others on the usage of World Shards in such a manner remains a topic of debate amongst the sorcerer community.

Generally, a player will work with an admin to detail the exact powers of a Grimoire through the request system. If it falls within their abilities, then the player will be able to use their imagination to acquire or contribute what is needed to serve as the central power source of the Grimoire. Once complete, the player will then be able to use the Grimoire as they like… With the usual caveats for potential destruction or loss.

Grimoire Destruction

Some Grimoires have no particular defenses. Some of them are in fact exceptionally fragile and can be easily destroyed, ending their effects upon such an event. Some others, however, are difficult or even impossible to damage outside of specific circumstances. All Grimoires, however, have at least one weak point that usually relates to the manner of their creation. In general, the more powerful a Grimoire, the more extremely durable or fragile it is.
