Katey is now a member of Faruja's squad, ready to fight Heresy and use her pie bazooka for great justice!

History

Katey was left at the doors of an orphanage when she was young, and the keepers never were able to track down her parents. They left a note, and some money, but clearly they were too poor or too ashamed to take care of her. At the very least, she knew they were out there, and as a child, she dreamed that they might someday change their mind and come back for her. She dedicated herself from a young age to working hard, learning everything she could, and showing herself to be a worthy candidate for some loving family, but the years passed without so much as a single person giving her a second glance. Girls who drew pictures or sang songs were chosen over a girl who could do mathematics in her head.

It was by a stroke of luck that she finally found a home. The matron at the orphanage had sent her to go fetch some bread from the market, and on the way back, the girl had been so distracted by trying to read something in a nearby shop window that she plowed right into a young man. In the scuffle, she managed to knock a small clock out of his hand, which broke into several pieces on the ground. After apologizing profusely, the girl promised to fix it, and sat down right there for probably an hour while the young man watched on with bemusement. At the end, he had a fixed clock, with a little bird chiming the time, and Katey had a home.

Though he was a single father, Corrin Fray did his best to raise his daughter and encourage her eccentric interests. When she wanted to join the military, he didn't try to stop her, or convince her she should be more like 'normal' girls. Instead, he just shrugged, laughed, kissed her forehead, and wished her well. She'd been assigned to a part of the military that worked mostly with Wyverns, and boy was that a mistake. Within her first week, the girl had her first experience on the back of one of the creatures and swore never... never again. Instead, she worked to create new sorts of armor for the Wyverns, or develop better designs for halters and saddles. She flat out refused to fly, but that didn't mean she couldn't be an asset, both on and off the battlefield.

Her strange inventions earned her a fair share of odd nicknames, but eventually she came under a commander who she respected, and at least treated her with some measure of it in return. It was for his sake that she didn't retreat when the heartless came. She and a handful of others remained when they fell back to the temple. Just what happened is still a foggy memory that resolves to little but pain and blood.

She awoke ages later in a hospital her wounds being tended by a priestess of the Church of Glabados. Unlike her commander, who she was told survived the battle, Katey had a far longer recovery time. She spent months under their care, first to make sure her wounds had mended properly, and later to fit her with the prosthetic that would make saving her life something worthwhile for the Church. Through it all, she never complained, and did whatever they bid her to. A loyal enough lap-dog since they were throwing her a pretty big bone - her life, and the ability to be useful with it. And that is what she intends to do.

Personality

Curiosity is one of Katey's greatest assets, as well as her worst flaws. She has a keen, analytical mind and is always trying to figure things out, especially machines. The technology of all the various worlds is an endless source of fascination. On the other hand, not everyone wants to share their secrets with an inquisitive mouse who sticks her nose where it doesn't belong. Luckily, being small, cute, and female gets her a long way in those situations. She's a hard worker, both as a soldier and as a machinist, but sometimes she can miss the forest for the trees. She can endlessly pour over little details, but miss out on the greater picture, which sometimes is quite useful for those who want to 'use' her skills. She has the tendency to focus on just the task at hand, and not think about what piece it plays in the bigger puzzle.

When it comes to others, Katey is friendly enough, although most tend to regard her as a kid-sister in some ways. She doesn't really mind that so much, though. Sure, there are times when it can get lonesome and she might want someone to actually take her more seriously than just as some silly girl, but most of the time she's perfectly happy showing off her new inventions and listening to others with her usual excitement.

Having pretty much grown up around people, Katey doesn't like to be alone, though. She'd take a barracks full of snoring soldiers to a quiet night by herself. She thrives on being around others, so the environment of the Church works nicely. Then again, since she wasn't raised within the Church itself, her allegiances to them is mostly built on the fact that she owes them for her life and well... she doesn't really have anyplace else to go. She's loyal enough though, especially once she finds out that that her commander is alive. She looks up to Faruja, like a girl to her older brother, and his faith is bound to bolster her to keep at it, even if sometimes she might doubt more than a true believer.

Outside of things like machines and the church and the life of a soldier, Katey loves... absolutely /loves/ music. She can just close her eyes and listen to a choir, or zone out to a band playing out on the city streets. She's hopeless at it, herself, both singing and instruments, but she /adores/ listening to others. She used to enjoy dancing, but since being so gravely injured, she tends not to - lest someone be a bit unnerved by her replacement limbs. Having been so badly wounded has also had a bad effect on her self-esteem. The mouse doesn't see herself as attractive, although she certainly might have been once. Really, not much has changed, but she struggles with it anyways, exchanging her uncertainty for the act of smiles and social joviality.

Unlike many people, she isn't particularly invested in the battle against the Heartless. Sure, she'll protect the Church when their interests are being threatened, but she's far more interested in developing weapons for others than fighting on the front lines. There's plenty of would-be heroes out there. She already gave an arm and a leg to the war, what else do they expect? The bigger picture is for more important people than her, and she's content to stay toiling away in her little corner of the universe.

Abilities

  • Eccentric Inventor: Like any good inventor, Katey has access to a wide variety of sometimes half-finished gadgets to call upon when the need requires it. Some of these works-in-progress will prove quite useful, where as other ones will be spectacular failures. She has a gift with machines and is great at diagnosing issues with almost any sort of technology that she's gotten to experiment with. She enjoys sharing her excitement about machines with others, which sometimes means that her friends and allies will get dragged in to testing whatever new device she's come up with, sometimes to their detriment.
  • Military Training: For all of her excitable nature, Katey is a soldier at heart. That means that she knows how to buckle down and fight. She's trained with most common weapons, although her favored one is a specialized chain-spear which she found and fixed on one of her first adventures serving in the Burmecian Army. As silly as she might come across, the girl can be quite tough, sticking through pain and hard situations with her infectious sort of enthusiasm.
  • Burmecian: As a form of demi-human, Katey has slightly enhanced senses of smell and hearing. Her sharp claws are good as natural weapons, and are equally good at picking up small objects or getting into tight places where she might have to hunt around for parts. Like most of her kind, she has a natural athleticism, although she prefers to keep herself on the ground rather than the air due to her past experiences.
  • Artificial Limbs: Due to her injuries in the final battle with the Heartless that caused her world to fall into the World of Ruin, Katey has had to have her right arm and leg replaced. The far reaching influence of the Church of Glabados was able to give her back what she'd lost, but requires quite a bit of maintenance. Both limbs can take quite a bit of damage, but parts are expensive, and take a great deal of skill to repair. This is the Church's bargaining chip when it comes to keeping her working hard and not questioning, since she wouldn't have much of a life without them.
