Sleeping in a tree during pouring rain. It was impossible, Avira was sure, but her tired body quickly decided otherwise.
Yet in an instant, the world around her was gone, surrounded by the choking darkness she had far too many close encounters with in the recent months. It was not to last as it all seemed to shift around her, peeling away and shrinking into smaller shapes, gradually revealing a scene Avira recognized from a previous life.
It was the interior of a building she had spent many eight hour days in. The doctor was nowhere in sight and a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach told her that he had been consumed. She could hear screaming nearby, frantic people trying to escape, and sirens off in the distance.
Those creatures were here, scurrying between shadows and rising from the floor. Barricades did not stop them. Heartless, she would later learn that they were named. Something was different, though. This time they were not leaping out at her. This time they parted their numbers to allow a tall figure to step through.
The red-haired man.
"No...impossible-" she voiced fitfully.
The red haired man lifted his gun, casually firing a shot, not aimed at her, but the wall behind her. Just one shot was more than enough to take it out completely, opening the building up to the view of the crumbling world outside. The sky was gone, replaced by the gaping darkness.
Against her better judgement, Avira looked behind her.
"STAY OUT OF MY WAY!" The red-haired man bellowed without warning, unleashing another shot. Unlike the first, this one did hit the huntress. Right in the chest.
Yet she felt very much alive as she flew backwards, out the newly created hole.
Avira awoke with a start, eyes quickly adjusting to the bright sunlight of the new day.
