The desert gave little comfort to Angantyr. Things have been...interesting lately, very interesting. The dark beast that was barely a man had a chance to have some peace to himself, the ship ride here has been...loud, people asking him things, people wanting to know about other things...Angantyr for once, was strangely affected that despite everything they still treated him like a person...even with his condition.
It was then, a Box was placed in his way. A small thing, compared to the beast as he was now. Slowly, he picked it up, looking over the box for a moment to try and see what it was, expecting a trap of sorts...but he saw nothing.
He shook it once...nothing. Okay, Angantyr started to lift the cover of the item, taking care to tear the wrapping around it. Slowly...very slowly, he lifted the thing inside out of the box. He looks down at the item, covered in gold and silver. Delicately made for him, he turns it over to find a message.
‘From Rellius, with love’
Slowly, Angantyr turns it back around, staring at the picture frame and the picture inside. It was a picture of his family. It had been some time since he saw them, all of them...like this.
His eyes look over his father, dressed in the ornate armor of the Paladin. The man who had trained Rellius to replace him as head of the family. The man that looked down on him with shame and dispassion. The man who never once held him, never once treated him like a son, only a burden. The man who had threatened to stem the flow of darkness from him, if he could not control it on his own power...
There was his mother, who treated him with disdain. Who had little to do with him as possible...who seemed to care little when her son was treated like garbage for nothing more than being born. Who had scolded him once because Rellius got injured during a little rough housing...
The brothers and sisters who came after Rellius, each one treating him less like a brother, and more as an example of the sacrifice made by the household generations ago. He hardly knew them, and they never made any move to know him. They left him alone, only because they were afraid of him.
And then there was Rellius, the brother he had been closest too despite being undermined by him. Who betrayed their brotherly affection when Rellius betrayed their home, giving it over to the Arcadians in a fit of compassion for their people...but not for the men who died defending their home...and thrown on the altar as a sacrifice...who would even sacrifice their own kinship over this...
Angantyr, with a movement of his hand, crushed the picture frame and it’s contents with one hand, he held it there, even as glass bit into his hand, letting the feeling of pain run down his arm before he released it and let the pieces drop into the sand. He turned, letting the destroyed frame sit there, the crumbled picture of the family starting to burn with dark flames as Angantyr continued to walk away.
“If this is your idea of a gift brother, then I hate to see what you give your enemies.”
