The legend of the Zodiac Braves is famed throughout the kingdom of Ivalice as part of its ancient history. Those who had believed in Ajora and his miracles formed the Church of Glabados, believing that Ajora was truly a saint and that his miracles were the word of the gods. To further strengthen Ajora's image, the Church of Glabados incorporated Saint Ajora into the legend of the Zodiac Braves. They claimed that Saint Ajora led the twelve Zodiac Braves against a demon summoned by the King of Limberry. While it may be a most ironic moniker, Ramza Beoulve's Heretic group - who were held back by the sudden Heartless raid on Ivalice - end up being named after this legend after the world falls and they come to this new world. Having found out about the Lucavi plot, they've been named the New Zodiac Braves by some whom have heard shards of stories, and claims of wishing to stop a demon uprising.

History

The New Zodiac Braves was formed shortly after Ramza witnessed the death of the commoner Teta, sister to Delita, at the hands of Algus and a number of Hokuten knights led by his own brother Zalbag. In that moment he turned against the Hokuten, killing Algus and fleeing to become a mercenary, parting ways with the heart broken Delita. However, he met Delita again when Delita kidnapped Princess Ovelia, claiming to have his own plans for ending the war. Delita was confronted by the Hokuten knights and Ramza was once again forced to fight the Hokuten, seeking to help Delita and Princess Ovelia herself, now that the Hokuten were under the command of Ramza's brothers who had their own evil plans for the princess. After Ramza defeated the knights, he rescued Ovelia and Delita fled again. Both Ovelia and her personal knight Agrias, sought sanctuary at the Glabados church in Mullonde under Cardinal Draclau, while Ramza headed to Goug to help Mustadio rescue his father. However, when the party returned to the church, Draclau sought the stone that was in Mustadio's possession and revealed his true identity, transforming into a Lucavi Demon and attacking the group.

After another gruelling battle, Ramza and his party fled, now aware of the secret society that ruled the church as well as their plot to revive the Ultima demon using the remaining Zodiac stones. It was at that moment that the heartless attacked Old Ivalice, sending the world into chaos and engulfing it in darkness. In the confusion, Ramza's party was able to flee the church and they regathered in the new world with a new purpose in mind: To recover the remaining zodiac crystals and prevent the rise of Altima,the bloody angel.
