"Oh, GAWD! If I knew this was gonna happen, I would've taken rope escape lessons more seriously!"

 +
The daughter of Godo Kisaragi and his eventual successor, Yuffie is a young ninja from Wutai. As a child, the heiress bore witness to the full-scale war brought to her homeland by ShinRa Electric Power Company. Though ShinRa forced the island nation into submission, they withdrew from their conquest, leaving the countryside battered and the indigenous population resentful. A dark energy began slowly to invade the crippled land in the aftermath, and as the Heartless came to roam the streets - Godo growing colder with each passing day - Wutai eventually declared that they would retaliate against ShinRa for past aggressions. Raised on tales of glory and heroism, Yuffie wanted nothing more than to reinstate the pride once felt by her people, but when she herself was expected to join an elite ninja force attacking Midgar, she ran away. Fiercely patriotic but morally just, Yuffie believes there is another, less bloody way to save her home, and that it could be done through collecting what was the most quantifiable form of power in her world: Materia. Unfortunately, everything went black, and she found herself... here.

Godo Kisaragi is their current leader - something of a cross between ruler and shogun. Fiercely dedicated to his people during times of internal conflict in past, this caused him to neglect his duty to his new family. A pregnant Kasumi Kisaragi was left behind in his steed, and eventually gave birth to the one and only successor to the Kisaragi name - Yuffie. The future of Wutai.

 +
Until her death, Kasumi raised Yuffie on her own and in relative peace. A loud and vibrant child, Yuffie was often up to her ears in all sorts of mischief, especially with the elderly inhabitants of the village. The little girl could be found stuck in their cupboards, and once in a large pot that she wasn't tall enough to climb out of. She toppled into babbling brooks, and came home caked in mud. She'd even nick someone else's belongings, entirely by accident.

Yuffie just picked it up, and forgot she had it.

Still, the people of Wutai loved Yuffie, and she loved them in return. When not in the midst of causing trouble, the townspeople would regale the child with old stories and legends. Fantastical tales of heroism, of Wutai's origins, and the shinobi's ferocity in battle. Yuffie thrived on the storytelling, proclaiming at an early age in play that she was the Greatest Warrior Ninja of Wutai, and they'd fondly pat her head.
 +
 +
After Kasumi's passing, Godo Kisaragi's position shifted to a political figurehead, rather than stalwart protector. He returned home to raise his daughter, who was brazen by this point and without fear. Yuffie's father sought to instill his child with the core values of Wutai. Something substantial, beyond the tales and fables, to nurture her. She would indeed become the great warrior ninja, as the people needed her to be... But Yuffie instead rejected tradition, and was constantly rebelling against Godo. She found little interest in the stuffy teachings and their application, and would even have the audacity to fall asleep or daydream.

Though the child showed considerable talent, this neglect was very frustrating for Godo, who had far more to be concerned with then his uppity, disobedient daughter. Yuffie thought of her father as an unfit parent who let her mother die. How dare he just show up and attempt to force her into discipline and training! No matter the care showed, to Yuffie, he was devoid of paternal love and patience.

The war with ShinRa Electric Power Company came suddenly and without warning around Yuffie's ninth year. At first, there were negotiations. Contracts and treaties - ShinRa wanted to build a reactor to siphon more of the Lifestream from the Planet - but when Godo rejected all offers, violence visited the shores. En masse, ShinSec and SOLDIER poured in, and the Wutai ninja answered the call. The battle's conclusion came with the fall of Fort Tamblin. Forced to surrender unconditionally, it was a very hard pill to swallow for Godo and his people, who bravely fought in vain to protect their beloved country. ShinRa had always meant to claim the land afterwards, but in the end, with their own forces decimated and Genesis calling for a rebellion, they withdrew entirely, only banning Wutai from using materia and warning them of the consequences of retaliation.
 +
 +
They said... that if Wutai dared to fight ShinRa again, they would not only crush the small nation...
 +
 +
They would wipe the little island off the face of the Planet.
 +
 +
That was enough to sow the seeds of deep resentment. In the populace, in their leader, and in Yuffie.
 +
 +
With so much negative energy surrounding Wutai, it's no wonder that Godo was approached by a Shadow Lord. Though he was content simply to allow Wutai to wallow in its defeat, he was eventually persuaded to reclaim their pride and former glory. He made a pact, and ShinRa's threats were no longer of concern. He had the Heartless to command.

Godo Kisaragi traded his nation and all those in it to the Darkness.

Yuffie, in the beginning, supported the declaration that Wutai would bring a new war to ShinRa's doorstep. She wished for nothing more than to see Wutai a strong, powerful nation once again. The Darkness managed to gain a foothold in her heart during this time, but it has not yet claimed it. No matter how much the girl may steal, no matter how rude she can be, Yuffie has a certain pureness to her and places the well-being of her people always before herself.
 +
 +
So, should the Darkness be unable to claim her heart immediately, it would do so gradually... And make her blind to its presence in Wutai. Yuffie could not see the Heartless - to her, they were merely warriors she did not recognize. She could not see how it twisted the other villagers. She was oblivious to the abrupt change in her father - Yuffie just believed that Godo was distancing himself further, the more the fight against ShinRa dragged on.

When AVALANCHE arrived in the capital, further strain was placed on the village. In order to take their own stand against ShinRa Electric Power Company, they occupied a pagoda and made it their stronghold. Somehow, Yuffie managed to involve herself, and as Turk drove AVALANCHE out, it was only through cooperated efforts that she escaped unharmed. Yuffie ran upon learning Turk's identity, and they were chased away.

Almost considered a full-fledged ninja, it was inevitable that Godo would order his daughter into the fray - meaning, 'Pack your bags and go to Midgar' - but Yuffie deserted them along the way. She decided that after watching the battle drag on for so long, she had a better idea on how to return glory to Wutai, which was not the tourist nation we see in FFVII, but a militaristic land, overrun by the Heartless. A horrible place that was nothing like the home she loved. She picked the pockets of travelers and merchants, legality of her actions be damned. It was for the greater good. She imagined herself like the hero of the stories she had heard all her life. I can do this on my own, Yuffie thought to herself. Without pointless bloodshed, Wutai would simply overpower (or frighten away) ShinRa and reclaim what was rightfully theirs.
 +

As stealing small change and supplies seemed insufficient, she set her sights on materia to threaten ShinRa. Yuffie took to the woods to stage elaborate, innovative traps and catch her victims off-guard. Smoke bombs, loud noises, or just plain bashing them on the head with a log - really, it was anything that enabled her to swoop in and make off with as much as she could carry. This was a far more profitable return.

When the light returned, Yuffie found herself as she had been, but fearing the worst for her home, she attempts to find it in this new world... All while collecting a little materia along the way. Let's just hope that this Darkness can be purged from her heart at some point, before it's too late...

First impressions of Yuffie Kisaragi are generally unfavourable. Not only is she arrogant and rude, Yuffie is sneaky, selfish, annoying and uncultured. She can be a royal pain in the neck, and you better keep an eye on your valuables - she just might steal them.

At times, Yuffie is even discriminating, cold and insensitive; she's both brutally honest and tactless, but does not appreciate such bluntness in others. Abrasive and quick to anger, Yuffie is prone to arguing endlessly, often resorting to insults. Her cruel words could probably sear the hide off a dragon.

Not many would care to see beyond this - when greeted with all her negative traits at once, why should they?

For those who chance getting to know the young heiress, they quickly come to the realization that her aggressive exterior is a front; they often learn that while Yuffie may be a cocky, loud-mouthed tomboy on the outside, she's extremely charismatic, sweet and compassionate underneath. Her love for others is paramount - Yuffie is a true friend to those she respects. No stranger to hardship or suffering, she is sympathetic to anyone who has led a similar life. Yuffie is a dedicated and reliable ally; even when she doesn't want to help, Yuffie will with minimal resistance (but she'll likely complain).

As someone who is morally just (mostly) and satisfying the strong desire to 'be the hero', she's stupidly brave and self-sacrificing, and expects the same from others. After all, being impulsive, Yuffie often acts without hesitation, shame or fear of the consequences. Sometimes, she needs to be saved from the trouble she gets herself into. This requires a small amount of willingness to endanger oneself on Yuffie's behalf to be her pal.
