The Al Bhed are a nomadic tribe at odds with the dominant religion of Spira, Yevon. Once the people of the Bikanel Desert, their homes were destroyed by Sin over a thousand years ago, scattering their people across the world. Typically regarded as filthy heathens, Al Bhed are known for their use of forbidden machine, their swirled pupils and green eyes, and their lively expressiveness. Most Al Bhed are often easily identified by their almost comical emotional energy in expressing just about anything. Most Al Bhed are dedicated to the excavation and discovery of new technology and are therefore regarded as enemies to the Church of Yevon. Some Al Bhed can hope to be tolerated in more reputable professions such as merchants. However, most Al Bhed are often chased off from areas that are heavily influenced by Yevonites. The Al Bhed typically speak a mixture of a unique language known as 'Al Bhed' and common Spiran words. This language is often hard to learn as most translation texts were scattered across Spira and are even more scattered since the Darkness. Despite this hatred, the Al Bhed seem to have some regard to the lives of the followers of Yevon. It was for this reason that the Al Bhed began to abduct Summoners from their pilgrimage and prevent them from achieving the Final Summon. Since the fall of 'Home', the Al Bhed have almost fully returned to a nomadic lifestyle, never staying in any area unless there are signs of salvageable and useful technology. While Home could be reestablished, most Al Bhed are often on the look out for allies to ward off the witch hunts being carried out against them.

History

After the destruction of Home, the Al Bhed have no longer enjoyed having a true 'home'. Their numbers dwindled even more during the Heartless coming to Spira, after Yuna's 'failure' to perform the Final Summoning. However, that did not halt their desire to remain alive and protect the world they'd come to love. With the coming of the Heartless soon after Yuna's initial journey to Zanarkand, they begun to dig into the knowledge of Machina more than ever, and put up an amazing fight.

However, it wasn't to be enough. With the disappearance of Yuna and her party - between Sin and the Heartless - the 'fall' of Spira became inevitable. And now, in this new world, they find themselves hunted even more severely now by the Yevon church.

However, there is hope. The ruins of Home have been found recently, and some Al Bhed are rumored to be gathering at its fallen skeleton in order to return it to its former glory.
