Deep within the realm of the darkness, a mote of light drifts aimlessly among the pitch-black waves, allowing the current to guide it wherever it may. Bright yellow spots emerge briefly from the shadows, curious to the source of the glimmer that shines among the dark. However, those eyes swiftly fade from view, retreating back into the dark whence they came as the object moves ever closer.

Those that manage to catch a glimpse within the light notice the unconscious form Mickey Mouse. It remains uncertain how long The King has been adrift along the black sea since being consumed by the heartless in Southern Manhattan. The battle above was long and strenuous, exhausting him to the point of his body forcing him to sleep in order to recuperate his strength.

However, The King of Disney Castle does not appear to be alone. He is being protected from the surrounding darkness by a powerful barrier that was forged from the will of his close friends, who appear as fleeting apparitions undergoing specific tasks. The form of Knight Goofy stands with his shield at the ready to defend against anyone who would harm the mouse, while his partner Donald gazes like a sentry with an ever-watchful eye. The form of Princess Daisy shimmers at times above the barrier with her eyes closed, while delicate hands are poised casting a spell to hide the king from being detected by more powerful forms of heartless roaming the area. Finally, the form of Queen Minnie fades in with the king’s head resting upon her lap as she focuses the power of her light to heal his extensive wounds.

Meanwhile, King Mickey continues to dream. His expression continuously shifts between looks of despair, fear, and sorrow as he struggles unconsciously with the results of his choices from before. Meanwhile, in an attempt to set his mind at ease, his personal unconscious settles upon a distant and yet appropriate memory.

Ten years into the past:

The King is seen floating aimlessly alone in the middle of space. His clothes are appearing to be of similar style though are colored black and white. Drifting in and out of consciousness, Mickey shivers as the bitter cold bites painfully at his skin. The keyblade master is uncertain why he is alive though the pain at least lets him know that he is just that: alive. He glances down towards the Star Shard, gleaming with it's emerald glow. The green hue of the relic appears to be surrounding The King’s body, keeping him expiring in the cold reaches of space.

However, the mouse cannot move as his strength spent from a prior battle against a foe he cannot quite recall. All he can do is look around at the stars and wait for death’s merciful embrace. As he begins to close his eyes, a voice begins to speak to him…

“Mickey…” “Yes?”

“You cannot rest just yet…” “There is nothing more I can do.”

“You have a promise to keep…” “A promise?”

“Do you not remember the promise you made?” “Who are you?”

“I am you… and you are me.” “Being cryptic does not help me understand any better.”

“Silly, King. I am the part of you that you reject.”

“The part of me that I fear and reject? What are you talking about?”

“Remember your promise, oh great king. If you do not, it will be not be long before you become that which you most fear.”

A short time later, an individual outfitted in a full-suit of dark blue armor arrives upon a flying machine shaped in the style of glider that has not been seen in the world for many years. The King recalls the feminine form of the figure as she gathered him onto the glider, rescuing him from death’s grip.

It is then King Mickey wakes from his dream. He blinks a couple times before rubbing his eyes with his gloved hands and sits up. The silhouettes of his friends have vanished and The King, while not 100 percent, still feels a much better than before.

Mickey’s gaze wanders and notes the darkness surrounding him, causing him to recall the events prior to being taken forcefully by The Heartless. His expression grows somewhat grim at the circumstances though he is at least glad to be alive. Bringing his hand over his heart, The King closes his eyes and quietly gives thanks to his friends for their divine intervention.

The barrier finally makes its way a shore and with the motion of his hand, King Mickey dismisses both the barrier and hides the light of his heart. He understands that he needs to find a way through the darkness and back to Manhattan. The battle is not yet over and he has others waiting him.

With a determined gaze, King Mickey says quietly to himself, “Hang in there, everyone. I will find my way back to you.” then looks at his hand before continuing, “Consider that a promise I intend to keep.”
