Clad In Darkness

A sinister armor-clad figure serving the Forces of Ruin, Golbez rose from complete obscurity to his current position as the Lord Captain of Baron's Red Wings. While appearing to be entirely subordinate to Baron's King, it is in reality he that dictates to the King - a man whom he has replaced with his trusted subordinate Cagnazzo. While Golbez' behavior as Lord Captain is impulsive and horrifically destructive, there is unmistakable genius in his aggressive tactics, and he commands as effectively as any campaign-vetted general. His personal skill in battle reflects his formidable presence and command; despite the heavy armor he wears, Golbez is a master of the black magics. Though certainly a man to be feared, assuming that it is a man underneath that armor instead of a demon, Golbez's meteoric rise from obscurity leaves more questions than answers...as do his motivations.

Forsaken By The Light

Golbez is aware that the Light has shunned him. In turn, he shuns it - he has steeped himself in Darkness for as long as he can remember, contorted every thought, urge, and desire towards one of corruption and withering.  This in combination with his half-Lunarian blood makes him a perfect target for the Lunarian ZeMus' manipulations – ZeMus controls Golbez through subtle, whispered temptations and warnings, through taking on an almost paternal figure throughout the warlord's late childhood and adult life.  It is in this way that ZeMus keeps Golbez focused singlemindedly on ZeMus' goals – to Golbez, collecting the Crystals, sundering the World Hearts, and eradicating all terrestrial life is the swiftest, surest way to vengeance for Golbez' dead father KluYa. The world must be prepared for the ascent of the Lunarians, after all.

SWM Looking For An Obnoxious Paladin. Very dark. -Extremely dark-.

Regarding that justification; Golbez has reason for his singleminded evasion of Light.  In youth, Golbez was taught magic by his father and excelled with the darker magics. White magic - even Cure! - was forever beyond his grasp, to his father's great disappointment. An attack on his village left Golbez' father KluYa dying in his son's hands - dying, save for the chance that Golbez might cast a healing spell.  KluYa died disappointed, and in the end, Golbez simply wasn't able to measure up.  That's the sort of thing that convinces a man he wasn't meant for the Light, was born flawed.  That's the sort of thing that stays, and were you to ask him about his inability to cast Cure spells, his disinterest in their study, his dispassion for the Light itself – well, you'd likely not live much longer than it takes for Golbez to get extraordinarily angry with you.  He's ashamed of it. And as we know, shame leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and -hate leads to the Dark Side-.

And so, Golbez went on to massacre his village, to carve his name into the flesh of the world.

Golbez' power lies in his utter mastery of Black Magics - his understanding of Darkness enables him to manipulate fey force beyond even the strongest of known, scholarly spells. This means that the Warlock is not limited to such mundane discourse as Firaga, Flare, or even Ultima -- no! From Golbez' very fingertips, lightning seethes like a serpent, pure magical force coalesces into small gravity wells! Darkness seethes from him like heat from a furnace, moulded into dreadful force by his sheer will! Golbez has further pushed his understanding of magics to enable combat teleportation; as his magics affect his foes, he is able to vanish and immediately manifest himself nearby, relative to their position.

Golbez has so bonded himself to Darkness that even its greatest minions follow his every command - a great Shadow Dragon can manifest itself at his behest, though it has only been witnessed to merge with its targets, enhancing their abilities and attacks.

The most worrisome of Golbez' attacks involves him calling upon his mastery of that same raw, elemental force spoken of earlier - the Lunarian ZeMus further lends Golbez potent, astral magics for a horrific display of force! Lightning, crushing vaccuums, and even meteors shriek down from the sky to ensnare an unlucky foe in a vortex of crushing pressure and blistering heat! Look upon the Twin Moon and wallow in fear, for Golbez has brought his terrible anger to bear!
