According to legend, the people of the universe once lived in harmony on one world, with their hearts full of light. Unfortunately, they began to selfishly fight over the light, and darkness grew within their hearts, covering everything and destroying the world. The light survived in the hearts of children, who were able to rebuild the broken fragments of the one world into many, smaller worlds. However, the true light was still hidden in the darkness, so the worlds remained separate. As manifestations of that Darkness, natural Heartless have existed within the Realm of Darkness ever since. However, due to the walls between the worlds, they could initially only enter the Realm of Light when summoned.

There are many kinds of Heartless - large and small, but there are two distinct types. There are the pure-blooded heartless and the Emblem heartless. Short of shadow heartless, pure-blooded are rarely seen in the worlds of light and shadow. It's the Emblem ones that are far more common, created either by Ansem's production lab beneath Malificent's castle - or one of those in contact with the Shadow Lords who dare create their own. Most of the Heartless found in space are Emblem Heartless.

Noise

Noise, created by Reapers, are counted as Emblem Heartless. However, they are created through a different technique that simply makes for a different emblem - and don't need a heart to be formed. They are still able to be controlled like any heartless however, and it's certain to come as a shock to the Reapers that they are not the end-all be-all in controlling them.

Vulnerability

Important to note is that Pureblood Heartless are difficult to harm without proper weaponry, or without a heart of sufficient light or darkness. A wooden sword is sure to just bounce off of them - though weaponry like lasers and metallic swords will do decently. Still, your average villager will likely only be able to run away. If you're going to punch them - you better put your heart into it!
