Profile

Merlock is an immortal shape shifting wizard. Merciless, cruel, and power-hungry, he desires nothing more than to re-obtain his greatest treasure -- the Wishing Lamp. With his magic amulet, he need only obtain the Lamp once more and combine the two artifacts, and he will obtain unlimited wishes from the Genie of the Lamp. However, it seems as though fate conspires against him, and he has thrown his lot in with the Heartless for the time being -- using the shadowy creatures to search the vastness of the worlds for that which he has spent thousands of years craving above all else. Making the worlds serve as a means of venting his anger and hatred is also nice, of course.


History

Merlock is a sorcerer whose birth and childhood lay shrouded in the mists of ancient history. He was around when the mythical city of Atlantis still existed. After using a powerful talisman in combination with a magic lamp, Merlock gained the ability to force the Genie of the Lamp to grant him unlimited wishes. His first wish was to live forever. His second was to keep anyone from being able to wish his talisman away from him in the event the lamp were to be stolen -- though the talisman itself can still be physically taken from him through conventional means. His reign of terror lasted thousands of years. He was responsible for Atlantis -- a very popular resort -- sinking beneath the waves, simply because he could not get reservations. He buried the Roman city of Pompeii under lava and volcanic ash by wishing for Mount Vesuvius to erupt, simply because he lost his temper. It was not until the famous thief Collie Baba stole the lamp from him that his terrible wishes came to an end. For thousands of years he has searched for the lamp, to no avail.

Recently he has allied with the Shadow Lords and the Heartless, seeing in them far more use than his mortal minion, Dijon. While he cares little for the objectives of the Heartless and the other Shadow Lords, he has enough willpower to remain relatively untouched by the Darkness, and powerful beings should stick together -- especially when the various "heroes" of the world continually defy their grandeur.

If he gets the lamp, then it doesn't really matter what he has to do to aid the other Shadow Lords, but in the meantime making use of the endless hordes of shadowy creatures to express his frustrations and exact his vengeance is an acceptable pass-time. Further, being in the presence of others like himself is a refreshing change.

Dijon is, simply put, not much of an improvement in terms of company even after thousands of years of working alone.


Personality

Merlock is someone who has tasted absolute power and abused the heck out of it to the extreme. He was always the type to want power, wealth, influence, and -- while respect can sometimes be nice -- he generally preferred that people fear him. When he acquired the means to make all his wishes literally come true, he had no reservations in using it for such. However, he used these wishes in the most cruel ways imaginable. Any slight or perceived slight against him was punished brutally, regardless of the scope of the "crime". He could not get reservations to a resort. Instead of wishing for reservations, he wished for the resort to be destroyed along with everyone visiting said resort. He lost his temper over some trifling matter, and killed 16,000 people without any concern by making a nearby volcano erupt. Killing is one of the uses he has made of the lamp, but more cruel fates are not beyond him. Transforming enemies into beasts, ornaments, or similar as punishment is something he finds amusing.

He is sadistic, destructive, self-centered, and having lost the lamp and the Genie that dwells within, he has become obsessed with re-obtaining the limitless power to make his darkest desires become real. No means is too risky, no method too foul, no body count too high. He doesn't care who else gets hurt as long as he comes out of it smelling like a rose, so to speak. He does not handle humiliation or being denied things well at all, and remembers those who have wronged him -- even to the extent of hunting them down, their families, relatives, friends, and loved ones and eliminating them, even if it takes centuries or millennia. His grudges are those that will last an eternity, and if he ever regains the lamp, many worlds will suffer under the heel of Merlock and his Heartless minions.

While Merlock is prone to fits of anger, he is also patient as only an immortal can be patient. His frustration makes him violent, especially when close to obtaining the lamp, but if he must hide himself and use subtlety, he is not above such. Even taking on loathsome forms, such as a rat or a cockroach is acceptable if that is what he must do. He simply remembers all of those responsible for him having to lower himself to such levels, and makes them pay later on.

Merlock is not above working with others, as he did recruit a relatively useless fool like Dijon to aid him. However, the other Shadow Lords are powerful in their own right. Merlock would LIKE to be the //the// most powerful of all, but he doesn't have a superiority complex significant enough that he can't recognize and respect the influence of other powerful beings. Those who APPEAR weak, however, are another matter. A mere mortal with a powerful weapon or sorcery or similar is one thing. A mere mortal with a top hat and cane is another.

Merlock's cultured history is evident in how he speaks. There is a certain aristocratic tone to his words. He uses very formal or at least very structured speech. Contractions are few or none, and he does not use 'slang'. He also has an extremely sarcastic and dark sense of humor, and is a master of understatement to humorous effect. He has had thousands of years to pick up various skills, among them how to effectively lead an army

As much as Merlock is obsessed with the lamp, he is able and willing to divert his attention with other things. Revenge is always nice, for instance, as well as simply tormenting or punishing others for the high crime of "being there". Enemies of the Shadow Lords are treated ruthlessly. He also has a habit of trying any new games he encounters when he is bored -- especially complex ones that test one's intellect. Keeping his mind agile is something he considers of utmost importance in retaining the flexibility and perspicuity to adjust to new situations on-the-fly.

Whether it's just in his nature or a side-effect of his frequent use of his talisman, Merlock can be rather savage and often feels "confined" if he can not change into an animal of some kind every few hours. Once you can take on the form of practically any beast in the world -- even some mythological ones -- staying plain human (err, "wolf man") feels very limiting.

Turning The Tables…. Upside Down October 23rd, 2013 In dire need of rescue, Maira's friends are led by Shadow through the Mtek factory so that she might persevere, and last at least one more day. Presumably, after a fight against Rakassa and her hired guns, the heroes can expect many years to come, which is more than what can be said for the furnishings and equipment in the lab, as Angantyr turns the tables(and other machines) on their sides, after having metaphorically turned the tables on the vileness that is the Gestahlian Empire!
Wrecking the End of Line July 11th, 2013 Maleficent seeks to summon a powerful evil to the End of Line club. What she gets? Is very unexpected however the target of her summoning is very well going to wreck the club if our heroes can't talk him down or stop him! Mayhem and also cake ensues!
What Happens Outside Agrabah... July 2nd, 2013 Desert Raiders are attacking caravans heading to or leaving from Agrabah. This is bad. What's worse is that the raiders are all Heartless, meaning they can pop in and pop out more or less at will. They steal anything magical or ancient and then leave. But this time, a caravan has a more capable protector and more people stop by when the trouble begins. But not everyone present is actually trying to help, and watching everyone from above is a sinister bird...
Kidnapping Spree June 29th, 2013 A kidnapping spree done by swarms of heartless and dastardly Illuminators is foiled. But is this truly the end? (Answer: Probably not)
