Background

Once upon a time, there existed a peaceful race of humans with the unique ability to summon. Long ago they lived away from the rest of humanity, living close to nature and learning to communicate with the mysterious magical beings called Eidolons. These summoners made a pact with the eidolons, the legendary guardians of gaia, forged from the world's crystals, and they learned to live in harmony with the world. Once they lived over vast areas of the mist continent, but after failing to control the eidolon Alexandra, they were hated and shunned, forced to retreat to a small town on the edge of the world, named Madain Sari. It was into this peaceful village that a girl named Sarah was born and raised to the tender age of five. Up until then, her life was peaceful, sheltered from the world. But in an instant that peace was shattered in the form of a massive, monstrous eye that emerged from the clouds one stormy night, and blasted deadly magic down upon the little town, reducing it to mere rubble. Sarah's parents awoke her in the middle of the night and they fled through the streets as everything came crashing down. In the chaos, Sarah's father was separated from her and her mother, but as they went back for him, their path was blocked off by falling columns. Believing him dead and unable to help him, Sarah's mother had no choice but to drag the crying child with her to the dock, where she ushered her and herself into a little boat, and they fled from the eye of death on the raging sea amid a terrible storm..

Princess Garnet woke up suddenly from her reverie, rubbing her eyes as the strange dream of sea and windstorms quickly changed into that of the castle's second floor balcony. She was here with her mother, Queen Brahne, looking down upon Tantalus' latest production of 'I want to be your canary'. But she did not really want to be here. As her mother laughed and clapped in delighted glee at the performance, she could only think of how much her mother had changed. How had she gone from being so kind and gentle, to so cold-hearted and power hungry, ever since father died? And who was the strange silver-haired man who roamed the halls and had become her closest advisor? Princess Garnet had made up her mind: She would run away, she would steal onto the Tantalus' ship, the 'Prima Donna'...That very night. And so, while all eyes were on the show, Garnet wrapped her cloak around herself, hiding her face from view as she sneaked out of the castle and down to the shipping docks. There she encountered the strange monkey tailed boy from the play, and he teased her, trying to figure out who she was. Trying to catch her. But Garnet was faster as she fled through the towers and down the stairs. And he followed, all the way to the ship.

Steiner was there too, determined to protect her from the thieves and vagrants as they prepared to leave the castle..With the princess! But it was too late! The ship fled, taking Garnet and Steiner along with Zidane, Vivi, and the rest of Tantalus. She later asked him to 'kidnap' her, and to take her to Regent Cid, her uncle. He must know what was happening with the Queen, how she was acting so strangely! Zidane agreed, but the journey there proved to take longer than expected. Queen Brahne had already blasted their ship with cannons from the Alexandrian fleet, and the damaged ship soon crash landed in the evil forest. Garnet was kidnapped by a poisonous plant before Zidane and the others rescued her, and they fled the forest before it became completely petrified, reluctantly leaving Tantalus member Blank behind.

Their journeys took them through an icy cavern where Zidane encountered the first of the waltzes who was sent to capture Garnet, before they made it to the small town of Dali, where they discovered that the black mage dolls were being manufactured and brought to life somehow - dolls that eeriy resembled Vivi. Throughout the journey, Garnet grew closer to Zidane, who taught her how to blend in better with the common folk, and she even assumed a new alias as 'Dagger', after Zidane's own weapon. Again, the waltzes attacked Garnet and the others, before they fled upon a ship that was headed for Lindblum. This ship too, was full of black mages, but as the waltzes continued to chase after them, the black mage dolls moved to protect Vivi and his friends as well..Before being blasted to bits by the waltzes.

Garnet could not comprehend all of this. The Waltzes, the black mages..Or Zidane's determination to protect her no matter what. However, he kept his promise and delivered her safely to Lindblum, where she met her uncle, Regent Cid, and told him everything. But it seemed that even Cid was powerless to do anything but to keep Garnet safe from her. He invited her to join him in the festival of the hunt, and for a time they were able to relax... Until they learned that Burmecia was being attacked by Alexandrian forces. Again Garnet was left in utter confusion and loss, trying to comprehend her mother's actions. This time, she determined to put a stop to it, and so she drugged Zidane and everyone else's food, putting them to sleep and then fled Lindblum with Steiner in tow, determined to return to Alexandria and plead with her mother to stop this nonsense. ...And then, things went terribly wrong. The heartless attacked them before they ever reached Alexandria. Garnet was separated from Steiner and pulled into a portal of darkness into a strange place she had never seen before. In desperation, she called upon the aid of the Eidolons to save her, and Ramuh appeared, fending off the approaching heartless before she blanked out.

When she awoke, she found herself in unfamiliar territory, but still alive, miraculously. Determined as ever, Princess Garnet once again set off for Alexandria, hoping to restore her kingdom and protect it, not only from Queen Brahne's insanity, but also from the new threat that was the heartless..
