Keyblade

The Heart is a powerful force in the worlds, and the Keyblade is both the conduit and symbol of that power. They can take on many forms, but a Keyblade always looks like an oversized key in some manner, and are generally wielded with sword styles.

Many legends surround the Keyblade and those who can Wield them, but much knowledge has been lost, and the Keyblade Masters who can pass on their knowledge seem to have vanished. The only known requirement to wield a Keyblade is to have an exceptionally strong Heart, but there could be other requirements lost to time.

The same requirement that makes one capable of wielding a Keyblade also makes them a target for those who would use or consume a strong Heart, most notably the Heartless. Keyblade Wielders are known for being powerful defenders and combatants against the Heartless, for only the Keyblade is known as an assured way to destroy a Heartless and free the Heart within them to move on to Kingdom Hearts.

Properties

Keyblades have a plethora of abilities, but they are all focused around the Heart. Some Keyblades allow for feats of might, while others are more suited to engaging in magic. All of them are powerful weapons, but each one is individual to the person who wields it. The shape and properties of the Keyblade may change with the attachment of objects that represent the bonds that a Wielder makes with others, usually in the form of a small charm on a chain, or a Gear.

Besides being a powerful weapon, a Keyblade’s most notable power is that of the capability to lock and unlock any object, especially World Shards and World Hearts, or even open ways through the Barriers of Light that surround Worlds. Doors and chests, unless barred by exceptional powers, are no barrier to a Keyblade Wielder as long as they can find a keyhole. World Shards can be opened back into a piece of a world, and a World Heart can be protected from the depredations of the Heartless through locking it.

A Keyblade does not need to remain in plain sight. A Wielder can call out a Keyblade from their Heart and dismiss it back at will. Without the most powerful of magics, a Keyblade cannot be taken from a Wielder. They can immediately dismiss and reform the Keyblade in their own hand at any time as a simple act of will If the Keyblade is hidden within their Heart, it has been observed that Heartless have a more difficult time noticing the Wielder. If a Keyblade Wielder falls in battle or for other reasons, the Keyblade goes dormant, its powers unable to be used by anyone else. In times past, it was known that there was a way to bequeath the power of the Keyblade upon another and allow them to carry it on when the previous Wielder no longer wishes to (or cannot) go on, but the knowledge of such a ritual has been lost… Or those who know are not sharing it. Tales tell of a Keyblade Graveyard where the blades of the past were laid to rest, but it has been lost to the Darkness.

The legends tell of more advanced powers that are available to those who have gained mastery over the power of the Keyblade.

Keyblade Creation

The original Keyblades were forged from materials with an extreme receptivity to Light and Darkness. The materials to forge a new Keyblade are powerful and rare, and the techniques to do so are lost to time.

Keyblade Destruction

Nothing is eternal, except perhaps Chaos and Omega. Destroying a Keyblade using normal means, however, only destroys that incarnation of the Keyblade. Another can, perhaps, one day inherit the power and manifest their own. There may be a way to destroy a Keyblade permanently, but so far no attempts have succeeded. It is, ironically, far easier to slay the Wielder.

Keyblade Acquisition

In these times of Ruin, Keyblade Wielders are more needed than ever. But due to cataclysmic events, the old Masters of the Keyblades are gone, scattered, powerless, or unwilling to share their knowledge. Perhaps they wait for signs of those who have the power and integrity needed to wield the power responsibly. Perhaps they are afraid of unleashing another terrible event like that which destroyed their order in the first place.

Or perhaps they are just waiting for someone to look hard enough, and grasp an opportunity when presented.

Because of the legends surrounding the Keyblades, some seekers have also encountered those who have proffered false Keyblades, sometimes bearing dire enchantments upon them, and others merely being clever fakes. Seeker beware.

From an OOC standpoint, Keyblades are not available to be applied for unless you are apping for an available FC who has one already. Those who wish to acquire one may have the opportunity to RP gaining one.
